Manganese Values for the Wairau Plain
Manganese occurs naturally in groundwater, but causes staining at concentrations above 0.04 g/m. The figure below shows levels exceed this threshold away from the main axis of groundwater flow beneath the Wairau Plain. Values above 0.4 g/m can cause health issues, but the manganese can be reduced to safe levels through treatment. Several of the sites in the figure below represent closed landfills or contaminated sites.
