The pattern in the above figure is consistent with natural evolution processes rather than land use effects, because increasing concentrations are associated with older groundwater. Concentrations are relatively low. Magnesium contributes to water hardness and the pattern in the above figure indicates that problems with hard water are most likely to occur on the edges of the Wairau Plain aquifers.
