Alkalinity Values for the Wairau Plain

Alkalinity is a measure of the ability of a groundwater to neutralise acids. Alkalinity is important because along with calcium it is the dominant constituent of most Marlborough groundwaters, although in most cases actual concentrations are low.

The figure above shows alkalinity values are relatively low for most Wairau Plain groundwaters. Concentrations increase away from the main axis of groundwater flow beneath the Wairau Plain due to the increasing levels of bicarbonate released as part of natural reduction reactions, or through the leaching of natural soil products such as carbonic acid.
