About Cemeteries in Marlborough
Cemeteries function as burial places, places of contemplation and places to record history. Marlborough District Council recognises that cemeteries are places for families and friends to establish connections with predecessors and research ancestral links.
Council acknowledges that cemeteries have a secondary function of providing areas of passive urban and rural parkland, allowing opportunities for landscaping in keeping with the natural elements of cemeteries to provide attractive community assets.
Marlborough District Council thus strives to provide quality facilities for the interment of the deceased in accordance with the Burial and Cremation Act 1964, by:
- Developing cemeteries as places of remembrance and historical importance in the district
- Meeting social and cultural requirements for the provision of cemeteries in the community
- Maintaining cemeteries as reserves when they have reached capacity
