Duncan Bay
An ageing jetty at Duncan Bay in Tennyson Inlet has been repaired thanks to Council and the Havelock Mussel Festival.
A combination of age, king tides and adverse weather had battered the jetty and last year the end collapsed making it unusable.
The Tennyson Bay Boat Club, with the support of Duncan Bay Residents Association, manages and maintains the waterfront facilities in the inlet, relying on fees from club members and donations from the public to keep things safe and useable.
Jetty repairs, including replacing rotting piles, were predicted to cost more than $20,000 so outside help was needed.
Council’s Small Townships Community Project Fund is a contestable fund available for small, low-cost infrastructure projects on outdoor public spaces and it was able to offer $17,700 while the Havelock Mussel Festival came up with $1000.
Sounds Ward Councillor Barbara Faulls said the Small Townships Committee recognised the strategic importance of the jetty and the fact it was used consistently by locals and visitors alike.
The local boat club and residents are delighted the jetty is back in action, looking better than ever, for the coming summer and have expressed their gratitude to Council and the Havelock Mussel Festival for their generous support.
