Industry Group - Circular Wine
The CIT Circular Wine Steerco (“CWS”) functions in an advisory role to advise the broader Circular Wine Group (CWG”), Wine Marlborough and Marlborough District Council on issues regarding sustainability and circular economies in the Marlborough Wine Industry.
Its mission is ‘to enhance the environmental impact of the Marlborough wine industry’.
The scope of the group is guided by the Circular Economy definition used by the MacCarthur Foundation.
“The circular economy tackles climate change and other global challenges like biodiversity loss, waste, and pollution, by decoupling economic activity from the consumption of finite resources.
The circular economy is based on three principles, driven by design:
- Eliminate waste and pollution
- Circulate products and materials (at their highest value)
- Regenerate nature
Underpinned by a transition to renewable energy and materials, the circular economy is a resilient system that is good for business, people, and the environment.
Ellen MacCarthur Foundation”
The key purpose of the group is to act in an advisory role to allow Council, Wine Marlborough, New Zealand Winegrowers and key industry participants and suppliers to seek input, and make decisions on sustainability and circular economy issues facing the Marlborough Wine Industry. This includes:
- Sharing knowledge on key practices, shared problems and identified improvements.
- Filtering solutions that pitch to the industry.
- Engaging with key suppliers as a collaborative industry.
- Piloting/ putting solutions into practice.
- Helping to draw up joint business cases for the region.
- Seeking funding and design the appropriate legal and governance structures for these business cases where appropriate.
- Helping to put Marlborough viticulture at the forefront of circular economy design
At all times the CWS will ensure community, stakeholders and all users are informed, have the opportunity for input, and are involved in the work of the group.
All agendas, minutes and papers will be available to the broader Marlborough Wine Industry in the interest of helping all industry participants in pursuit of the CWS mission.
At the request of the CWS, smaller working groups may be formed to progress certain projects. These working groups will be chaired by a member of the CWS but may include non-CWS members to the extent they have the necessary skills and experience. The chair of these working groups will report back to each steerco.
The group is a collaboration between industry and council. For details on the group please contact Wine Marlborough.
