Havelock, the township at the base of Pelorus Sound, was the first community to connect via the Smart + Connected process.
Through a facilitated workshop on 8 April 2014, about 70 community members of Havelock and the surrounding area met to discuss the township's future direction and vision.
Vision
Havelock: Heart of the Pelorus
Havelock is a confident and cohesive village community nestled in the natural beauty of the Pelorus where the mountains meet the sea. Passionate guardians of the unique local environment, the community is proud of its strong heritage.
The village enjoys economic prosperity through acting as a pivotal hub for its productive rural communities, its internationally recognised aquaculture industry and strong connections to the wider Marlborough Sounds, Blenheim, Nelson and beyond.
Priorities
The meeting set three main priorities:
- A new organisation for community governance.
- A Department of Internal Affairs grant.
- Building a boardwalk along the estuary.
A new organisation
It was presented that the perceived greatest challenge for Havelock was a fragmented community. To rectify this, a restructuring of the Havelock Community Association was proposed that would result in a fresh governance structure.
