Catchment Projects
Catchment Care is a collaboration between Council and landowners to provide solutions to improve water quality. Alongside Central Government, Council runs several programmes that provide financial support to implement these solutions in highest priority catchments, based on long term monitoring of water quality across the region which has identified the waterways that are degraded or at risk of degradation.
Whilst we are targeting high priority catchments first, Council may be able to provide information and guidance for other catchments. All farming communities are encouraged to form catchment groups among their neighbours. If you want to find out more about joining or forming a catchment group, contact us.
Council is working with communities in several high priority catchments to improve water quality:
-
At Risk Catchments
The catchments of Are Are Creek, Flaxbourne, Linkwater and Tuamarina Rivers have been identified as high priority catchments based on water quality monitoring.
-
Determining High Priority Catchments – Water Quality Monitoring
Annual water quality monitoring was used to identify waterways that were degraded or at risk of degradation and determined which catchments are considered high priority.
-
Taylor River Improvement Project
The Taylor River Improvement Programme was a joint programme between MDC and Ministry for the Environment to improve water quality in the Taylor River system and its tributaries.
