Age Friendly Strategy, 2022 - 2027

With nearly a quarter of Marlborough’s population aged 65 or over our ageing profile is one of the highest regions in New Zealand.

Previously Council has had a focus on supporting older members of the community through the Positive Ageing Accord Action Plan. This came up for review in 2019 and has been replaced by the new Marlborough Age Friendly Strategy 2022 - 2027

Following twelve months of data collection within the community and consultation with key stakeholders the document has been developed. The next step involves seeking Age Friendly Community accreditation

The eight areas which contribute to communities becoming age friendly and form the basis for the strategy include:

Housing
Social Participation
Respect and Social Inclusion
Civic Participation and Employment
Communication and Information
Community Support and Health Service
Outdoor Spaces and Buildings
Transportation

Council responses

In addition to areas identified in the strategy, Council responds to positive ageing in the following ways:

Provision of housing for the elderly
Provision of library services which includes responding to the particular needs of the elderly including large print, books, home bound services, talking books, digital support services.
Development of the Blenheim Bus Service - this was initiated by Council's Older Persons Forum
Council's Older Persons Forums held monthly to discuss issues in the community of particular interest or that have relevance to the positive ageing sector
