String quartet draws a crowd
Around 140 people enjoyed seeing the New Zealand String Quartet at Te Kahu o Waipuna last weekend.
It was one of four performances by the NZSQ in Marlborough. Two of those were free, including the one in the library and art gallery building.
The group also performed at Picton’s Little Theatre, the ASB Theatre and Waikawa Marae.
The visit was the result of a collaborative effort between the NZ String Quartet and Marlborough District Libraries, Community Learning and Engagement Coordinator Duncan Mackenzie said.
“Planning began in September last year and we hope that it’s the first of many collaborations bringing learning and experiential opportunities to everyone in Marlborough,” he said.
“It was great to see children coming in from football and netball along with members of the community from all age groups. The willingness of the musicians to stay and engage with the audience was a further positive note in our role as a community hub.”
Te Kahu o Waipuna hosts music-related performances scheduled so audiences can enjoy the more relaxed weekend vibe while visiting the library and exhibitions in the Marlborough Art Gallery.
Planning is currently underway to host a South American folk duo, a waiata session in conjunction with Matariki celebrations and a group of ni-Vanuatu musicians.
