Getting to know your bins
Marlborough’s new kerbside collection has been up and running for two weeks.
Red top (waste) and yellow top (recycling) wheelie bins replaced Council rubbish bags, and the maroon crate, previously used for all recycling, is now for glass recycling only.
Council’s Solid Waste Manager Mark Lucas said most people were getting things right but acknowledged it was a work in progress and there was room for improvement.
“Overall it was a very good start – 98 per cent of bins were collected in the first week of operation. There were no significant logistical issues for Council or contractor WM New Zealand,” he said.
The biggest issues in the first week of service were people putting recycling (not just glass) in the maroon crate and glass in the yellow recycling bin. While the yellow top bin is for recycling it is not for glass - that goes in the maroon crate.
“A key issue is getting the recycling right: please put glass only in the maroon crate and not in the yellow top bin,” Mr Lucas said. “Also, soiled nappies do not go in the recycling bin, they are a waste bin item.”
A number of people put black Council rubbish bags out which are no longer collected kerbside. Anyone with black rubbish bags can take them to a transfer station, the Waste Sorting Centre or the Resource Recovery Centre, Mr Lucas said.
A reminder of what goes in the yellow top bin:
- Plastics
Plastic material displaying recycling symbols 1, 2 and 5 are accepted. Everything should be rinsed - Metal cans and tins
Steel and aluminium cans can all be accepted. Everything should be rinsed - Newspaper, other paper & glossies
Ensure the lid can close to stop items blowing away - Cardboard
This includes egg trays and pizza boxes, cleaned of all food scraps - No glass
This goes in the maroon crate

If you have any items that can’t go in either wheelie bin or the maroon crate (i.e. lawn clippings or oil) they may need to go to the Greenwaste Facility or the Hazardous Waste centre. Go to our website for more information.
If you are unsure of your collection week just enter your address at within the smart map on the below page:
Go to our wheelie bin "What Is My Collection Day" page
You can also print off a calendar from the Council’s website. Your bins have a white label on them saying whether you are in week (group) 1 or week (group) 2. The waste (red topped bin) is collected one week, recycling (yellow topped bin and maroon glass crate) the next.
Bins need to be kerbside by 7am at least half a metre apart. Make sure they are clear of obstacles and not too close to other bins. Don’t overload them - you must be able to close the lid.
