Requested removal of Eucalyptus tree - have your say
Council wants your feedback on the future of the remaining Eucalyptus tree growing on Rema Reserve, in Hope Drive, Blenheim, after receiving a request from a nearby resident that the tree be removed.
The mature Eucalyptus viminalis is considered healthy. It is dominant in the landscape and can be viewed from the surrounding streets in the Witherlea area.
The tree is listed as a Notable Tree 189 in the Marlborough Environment Plan (MEP), recognised as contributing to historical, cultural and environmental values in the district. Only trees that are deemed significant and meet specific criteria become listed. Listing a notable tree provides a higher level of tree protection, with a resource consent required to significantly prune or remove a tree.
The resident requesting the tree's removal has told Council that they have reservations about the tree due to the debris that falls and blows on to their property and on to neighbourhood properties and roads. The resident has also expressed concern for the safety of reserve users, especially children who could possibly be playing in proximity to the tree.
Regular arborist inspections on the tree have been carried out. The tree is also inspected after any wind event over 75km/h. It is monitored every six months for possible hazards and work, including pruning/crown reduction and bracing and branch support, which has been completed as recommended by the arborists.
Feedback on the future of the tree will be presented to Council and assessed against the provisions of Council's Tree Policy. Depending on the decision made, a resource consent application may then be required to remove the tree.
If you'd like to have your say on the future of this tree please email Council by Monday 28 February.
