The strong currents and turbulent flows in the entrance to the Tory Channel / Kura Te Au are a well-known challenge to shipping.
The flows are predominantly tidal. While tidal flows can be accurately predicted, there is often a non-tidal component to flows, leading to a high level of uncertainty about the flow conditions at any given time.
The Tory Channel Current and Tide Model addresses this uncertainty by blending real-time data with hydrodynamic modelling to predict currents at any location within the channel.
Flowing arrows show the direction and strength of the predicted current. The display defaults to showing real-time current direction and strength in knots. Users can then roll forward to view the predicted current direction and strength.
Some tips for using the model:
- Use the slider at the bottom of the screen to set the time and see past data or future predictions.
- Hover over any point within the channel to see current strength.
- Click/tap on any point to see a graph of current strength and tidal level (flood) at any given time.
