Spartina (RPMP 2018)
Spartina is subject to an Eradication programme as part of the Regional Pest Management Plan 2018. It has a limited distribution and density and the long term goal is to eradicate the known infestations from Marlborough.
The Department of Conservation (DOC) leads the implementation of the programme in collaboration with Marlborough District Council. DOC will carry out all the control work required for this pest at no cost to the landowner (if on private land). Sites are visited by DOC staff each year over summer.
Marlborough District Council must provide annual reporting for this programme given it is incorporated within the Regional Pest Management Plan 2018. This reporting is outlined within the annual report, accessed via the link below.
Spartina is also an unwanted organism under the Biosecurity Act 1993 given it is on the National Pest Plant Accord list of species banned from sale, propagation, distribution or commercial display.
Should you see this plant please report it immediately to the Marlborough District Council who will liaise with DOC and arrange for its control.
