Marlborough has experienced severe weather events in 2021 and 2022, leading to evacuations, landslips, farm damage, and significant road network destruction. Fortunately, there was no loss of life. The potential rupture of the Alpine Fault (AF8) remains a significant concern.
Reviewed every five years, the plan provides clarity and certainty to emergency management staff and volunteers. It focuses on enhancing community resilience and working with local organizations to develop readiness plans for future disasters.
The plan aligns with the New Zealand Disaster Resilience Strategy, emphasizing community readiness regardless of location, culture, or social situation.
The plan highlights the collaborative nature of the CDEM response, involving various agencies and volunteers. In an emergency, seeing a firefighter, Police officer, Māori warden, or Red Cross volunteer means witnessing the broader Marlborough CDEM response.
This plan will guide Marlborough’s emergency management strategy for the next five years.
